Teacher Summit to Address Working Conditions

November 2017

This week, November 13 - 17, is American Education Week. I don’t have to tell any of you that education is the most noble of all professions and is the mother of every profession. Every day in the classroom or at your work site you do the most important work in the world –you ignite imaginations, share your passion for learning and inspire students to reach their highest potential. Your influence extends far beyond the four walls of your classroom. Your lessons will influence the future. You are dedicated to students, our profession and public schools, and we thank you!

Public schools are the cornerstone of our democracy. But today, like never before, public schools are under attack. Attacks on public schools come from without – from legislators, lobbyists and corporations trying to profit off the backs of our students. Attacks on public schools also come from within – from district and school administration micromanaging, extinguishing teacher autonomy, weakening working conditions and attacking contract language. All of the attacks are driving good teachers from the profession and deterring potential teachers from pursuing the career.
The union is not going to stand by as our contract, autonomy, working conditions and profession is attacked. The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association invites you to a Teacher Summit to address teacher working conditions on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 5:00PM - 7:00PM at the Marion Cannon Center for Advocacy. A panel of teachers will address issues followed by an open mic for teachers to comment. Representative Amy Mercado, a true friend of education, will be speaking. We invite you to attend this important summit so we can work together to come up with a unified message and comprehensive solutions that will help to improve working conditions, save teacher autonomy and retain teachers.
